Furan Analysis

What Is Furan Analysis?

Cellulose insulation degrades under thermal and electrical stress, forming furanic compounds that dissolve into the transformer oil. Measuring the concentration of these furans gives a direct indication of the Degree of Polymerization (DP) and insulation aging.

The key compound measured is 2-Furfuraldehyde (2-FAL), along with related furans such as 5-HMF, 2-FOL, and 2-ACF.

Test Standard

  • IEC 61198 – Mineral insulating oils – Methods for the determination of 2-furfural and related compounds

    🎯 What We Measure

    • 2-Furfuraldehyde (2-FAL)

    • 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF)

    • 2-Furyl Methyl Ketone (2-ACF)

    • 2-Furyl Alcohol (2-FOL)

    • Furfural concentration in ppb (parts per billion)

Key Gases Measured

Insulating Liquids – Measurement of Relative Permittivity, Dissipation Factor (Tan δ) and DC Resistivity.

2-FAL Interpretation
Interpretation Guidelines (Based on 2-FAL)
2-FAL Level (ppb) Condition Insulation Status
< 250 Normal Paper insulation healthy
250 – 1000 Moderate Aging Monitor closely
1000 – 2500 Severe Aging Plan maintenance/replacement
> 2500 Critical Condition Immediate action recommended
